Untitled #1 (Arctic Circle, Norway, 2008)
the road at the edge of the world
In the fall of 2006 and summer of 2008 I was invited for an artist in the county of Finmark, Norway. Varanger, located in the Arctic circle, is one of the world’s northernmost settled areas of the world and is the far northeast corner of the European continent, only a couple of hours drive from Murmansk in Russia. During my stays I followed the only road on the map, which runs along the coastline of the Varangerfjord and photographed it’s landscape, inhabitants and traces of human presence wherever I could find it in this remote region.
The residency ended with an exhibition of the work produced in Varanger at the occasion of the Polar Festival in Vadso.
